SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
In Africa, go on a safari to see the wildebeest migration.
Natural phenomena abound around the world, but few compare to the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem's annual Wildebeest Migration in terms of sheer size. The numbers alone are incredible: up to 2 million animals, including wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle, travel 3,000 kilometres (1,900 miles) to follow the rains and their ancient instincts.
It’s epic drama on a grand scale: the migrating herds face a variety of obstacles and hardships as they travel from region to region. They are constantly under attack from predators, particularly Africa's big cats, such as the lion, leopard, and cheetah, as well as the massive crocodiles that lurk at river crossing points.
Planning a Migration Safari
Some Tips
Book
well in advance
At least a year ahead of time. Lodges and camps book up quickly, especially during the Great Migration season, which runs from June to October. Remember that while this is safari's peak season and when the popular river crossings take place, the herds can be seen at any time of year.
Carefully
plan your timing
The Migration is a year long journey with some stages, such as river crossings, being unpredictable. When is the best time to go on a Wildebeest Migration safari? It depends on what you want to see and do.
Make
your journey more private
During the peak season for safaris, national parks can become extremely crowded (June to October). Consider staying in a private reserve or conservancy if you want exclusivity as well as access to the herds.
