African Luxury Safari: 5 Trips Compared by Style and Cost

An African luxury safari is worth the money when you get a private guide, a small camp or lodge, and a route matched to the wildlife season. Our five picks run from Tanzania's quiet southern parks to Botswana's water safaris and Rwanda's gorillas. Choose southern Tanzania for adventure and romance, northern Tanzania for a first safari or a family trip, Kenya for the Maasai Mara, Botswana for the Okavango Delta, and Rwanda or Uganda for mountain gorillas.

The trouble is that most luxury safari pages show the same lodge photos and hide the numbers. Prices run from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands per person, and a headline rate rarely says what it includes. Each trip below gets the same three checks: what it is, who it suits, and what it costs, with published price markers to anchor your budget.

We are Passionate Guides Tanzania, a locally owned operator in Arusha, and our founder has guided in Tanzania and Kenya since 2012. We run trips in the first three destinations and in Uganda and Rwanda. Botswana is the one pick we do not operate, so that entry is a neutral guide.

1. Southern Tanzania: Nyerere and Ruaha

Southern Tanzania is the quietest high-end circuit we run. It suits travelers who want empty tracks, walks and boat trips instead of crowded sightings.

7 Days Tanzania Southern Circuit

What the trip is

Our 7 Days Tanzania Southern Circuit is a private luxury tented safari through Nyerere National Park (Selous) and Ruaha National Park. You fly between the parks and spend three nights at Selous Siwandu Camp and three at Ruaha Jongomero.

A two-column checklist laying out four northern Tanzania safari itineraries and the stops each one covers.

Days mix game drives, guided walks and river safaris with a professional driver/guide. The price covers park fees for non-residents, activities, ground transport, taxes, round-trip airport transfers, meals and drinks. Alcohol is included except premium spirits and vintage champagnes.

Southern Tanzania trades crowds for walks, boat trips and empty tracks.

Who it suits

This trip fits romantics who like adventure and travelers on a second safari who have already seen the Serengeti. It does not cover the Great Migration, so choose a northern route if river crossings are your goal.

Check any operator the same way before you pay. Ask who guides, what vehicles they use and where the reviews live. We drive our own Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s and have 35 Tripadvisor reviews you can read.

What it costs

Luxury pricing spreads wide, so anchor your budget first. These are published starting points from other operators, not our quotes.

Published starting point Figure Per person per day
8-day luxury tented safari, South Africa From $6,299 per person About $787
High-end agency rate From $2,500 per person per day $2,500
Custom top-end itinerary From about $31,450 per person Varies by length

Request a quote through our enquiry form, WhatsApp, phone or email. Payment is a 30% deposit within 14 days of invoice, with the balance due 21 days before arrival, in USD or EUR. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory, and AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation is included on safaris and treks.

2. Northern Tanzania: Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Northern Tanzania is the best luxury African safari for a first trip, because the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire pack the classic wildlife into one week.

7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

What the trip is

Four of our private itineraries run here, each with a professional driver/guide:

  • 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari: Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, starting and finishing in Arusha.
  • 6-Day Wildlife & Cultural Safari: Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, plus a visit to the Hadzabe Bushmen.
  • 8 Days Southern Serengeti Migration Safari: Tarangire, Serengeti, Lake Ndutu, Ngorongoro and Manyara.
  • 9 Days Family Safari: Tarangire, Manyara, Lake Eyasi, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the foothills of Kilimanjaro.

The Classic and Cultural trips offer midrange or luxury lodges, or luxury tented camps. The Migration trip offers midrange or luxury accommodation.

Who it suits

First-timers get the most from the Classic trip. If you want the calving season, take the migration itinerary. Lake Ndutu is the target from December to April, and February is the best month for calving.

For a luxury family safari in Africa, the 9-day family safari has flexible pacing and handpicked lodges and camps. The booking form accepts children aged 0 to 11.

What it costs

The biggest price swing is the lodge tier, so ask for your quote at the luxury level and compare inclusions. Park fees, activities, transfers and meals sit inside our rates.

As a budgeting frame, take seven days at the benchmark range above. That is about $5,500 per person at roughly $787 a day, or $17,500 at $2,500 a day. For a couple, $11,000 to $35,000 in total. Use it to sense-check quotes, not as a price list.

Quote the luxury tier first, then compare what each rate includes.

3. Kenya's Maasai Mara plus Tanzania

Kenya's Maasai Mara adds some of East Africa's best game viewing, and pairing it with the Serengeti is the simplest way to cover both sides of one famous ecosystem.

What the trip is

We run three Kenya and Tanzania combinations. The 6-Day Mid-Range Safari covers the Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater and starts and finishes in Arusha. The 8-day trip adds Mto Wa Mbu village and Tarangire. The 10-day Best of Kenya & Tanzania adds Lake Nakuru and Amboseli, and you book international flights to and from Jomo Kenyatta airport.

All three are priced mid-range, with lodge upgrades available on request. On the 8-day trip, an optional Central Serengeti balloon safari on Day 5 costs $550 per person, booked and paid with us before the trip.

Who it suits

This route suits travelers who want two countries on one itinerary without handling two operators. If you want pure Kenya at the top end, look at Angama Mara, perched on the Oloololo Escarpment above the Mara Triangle, or Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp, in a private conservancy on the Mara's edge, and compare more African safari luxury resorts and what they cost.

What it costs

The extreme end is exclusive use. Ol Jogi, an 11-bedroom property on 30,000 acres, averages $33,500 per night for the whole lodge, with a minimum stay of 3 to 5 nights.

A worked example: four nights is $134,000. Shared by ten guests, that is $13,400 each for lodging alone. Our Kenya and Tanzania combinations are mid-range trips.

Whole-property buyouts cost per night, so divide by your party size before comparing.

4. Botswana: Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi

Botswana suits low-volume, water-based safaris. It is the one pick we do not operate, so treat this entry as a neutral guide.

What the trip is

The Delta and the salt pans give very different safaris. San Camp sits on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans and focuses on small creatures such as resident meerkats, with no wifi or electricity in the tents.

In the Delta, andBeyond's Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge is the priciest in that company's Botswana portfolio, and Jao Camp is known for its design. The Botswana Skybeds, near Sable Alley, let you sleep on a three-storey platform under the stars.

Who it suits

Honeymooners and repeat safari travelers get the most from Botswana. It rewards people who value atmosphere and quiet over a fast Big Five checklist, and the salt pans are not Big Five country at all.

What it costs

Botswana is one of the most expensive safari countries in Africa. Sable Alley sits at the more accessible end, so start there if you want the Delta without top-tier rates. Ask whether airstrip transfers and activities are inside the nightly rate, because that decides the real total.

Botswana rewards a bigger budget and patience, not a long checklist.

5. Rwanda and Uganda: gorilla trekking

Gorilla trekking is the strongest add-on to any luxury African safari holiday, and Rwanda and Uganda are where you do it.

What the trip is

In Rwanda, Bisate Lodge offers beehive-shaped villas on the slopes of an extinct volcano. Singita Kataza House is an exclusive-use house at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, a short trip from the gorillas of Volcanoes National Park.

Uganda's Bwindi forest is the other main gateway, and the Rwanda and Uganda trips we cover also include golden monkeys and the source of the Nile. Most travelers pair trekking with a savanna safari like the ones above.

Who it suits

This add-on suits fit travelers who enjoy hiking at altitude. Check age limits for families, because both countries set a minimum age of 15 for gorilla treks.

What it costs

The gorilla trekking permit is the big separate cost, and park authorities set and revise its price. Confirm the current figure when you book. Price the permit apart from the lodge, and ask any operator whether the permit is in the quote.

Price the gorilla permit separately from the lodge, then add them up.

Choosing your luxury safari

Match the trip to the wildlife you want. Southern Tanzania gives quiet adventure, the north gives the classic first safari and the migration, Kenya adds the Mara, Botswana offers water and atmosphere, and Rwanda or Uganda brings gorillas.

Then budget per person per day and read what each rate includes. Park fees, transfers, drinks and the lodge tier explain most of the difference between two quotes.

If you want a private guide and an itinerary built around these routes, request a custom luxury safari quote from our team in Arusha, starting with the 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari and its luxury lodge options.

Happy with our experience—loved having our own guide

“We had so much fun and saw wondrous numbers of lions, elephants, zebras wildebeest etc. The logistics were seamless and we loved staying in The Serengeti at Moyo Camp and Kontiki Ndutu camp. Visiting Tarangire is also highly recommended.”
