10 Days Kenya and Tanzania Safari: Day-by-Day Itinerary

The simplest way to do a 10 days Kenya and Tanzania safari is to fly into Nairobi and drive through Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara. Then cross by road into the Serengeti and finish with Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Amboseli, flying home from Nairobi. Book it as a private trip with one guide and mid-range lodges. That gives you two countries, six wildlife areas and no backtracking.

The problem is that most itineraries list parks but hide what matters. They skip the drive times, the border day and what the price covers. Two countries mean two sets of park fees, entry rules and lodge styles. A route that looks good on a map can turn into a week of sitting in a vehicle.

This guide comes from Passionate Guides Tanzania, a founder-led safari operator in Arusha. Its founder has guided in Tanzania and Kenya since 2012. You will pick your season, follow a day-by-day route, set a budget and compare packages, then handle booking, insurance and packing.

Why Kenya and Tanzania fit into 10 days

Ten days is the shortest trip that lets you see the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater without rushing. Shorter versions drop parks. Our 8-day route covers Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire. The 6-day version covers only three parks.

What the route covers

A 10-day Kenya and Tanzania safari typically links Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Amboseli. That is the route of our private mid-range 10-day safari. Arrival and departure are both in Nairobi, so you book one round-trip international flight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Kenya or Tanzania, or both

Neither country is better. They offer different things, and ten days lets you have both. Kenya's Mara is compact, with dense predator sightings, and Amboseli puts elephants in front of Kilimanjaro. Tanzania's Serengeti is far larger and often quieter. Ngorongoro Crater is a walled caldera roughly 600 meters deep, with a chance of black rhino.

Ten days is the point where two countries stop feeling rushed and start feeling like one trip.

Step 1. Pick your season and direction

Choose your month first, because it decides where the wildlife is and how the route should run. June to October is the dry season, with the easiest game viewing, and July to October is when the herds are usually in the Mara. January to March suits the calving season in the southern Serengeti, but then you would reorder the route toward Tanzania.

Match the month to the migration

The Great Migration does not follow the calendar exactly, so ask your guide for current herd positions before you fix dates. April and May are the wettest months. Some lodges close and roads slow down, but prices drop and parks are quiet.

Choose the direction

Starting in Nairobi and ending in Nairobi, as in the route below, keeps you on one airport. The alternative is to start in Nairobi and finish in Arusha. That saves the final Amboseli leg but means a one-way route and usually a second domestic or ground transfer. For a first safari, the Nairobi loop is simpler.

Settle the month before the parks, because the season decides which half of the route does the heavy lifting.

Step 2. Follow the day-by-day itinerary

This is a workable 10-day Kenya and Tanzania safari plan. It uses the same parks as our mid-range trip, though lodges, order and timing are confirmed in your own itinerary.

The 10-day route

Day Where What you do Driving
1 Nairobi to Lake Nakuru Airport pickup, afternoon game drive for rhino, flamingos and Rothschild's giraffe 3 to 4 hours
2 Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara Transfer, afternoon game drive 5 to 6 hours
3 Masai Mara Full day with predators and, in season, the Mara River Game drives
4 Masai Mara to Serengeti Road border crossing at Isebania, afternoon drive Long, with border
5 Serengeti Full day of game drives, optional balloon safari Game drives
6 Serengeti to Ngorongoro Morning drive, then up to the crater rim 4 to 6 hours
7 Ngorongoro to Tarangire Early crater descent, then on to Tarangire 2 to 3 hours
8 Tarangire to Amboseli Morning drive, then Namanga border into Kenya Long, with border
9 Amboseli Elephants, with Kilimanjaro views on clear mornings Game drives
10 Amboseli to Nairobi Drive to the airport for your flight home 4 to 5 hours

Where the long days fall

Days 4 and 8 are the hard ones. Both include a border, so expect immigration paperwork and waiting. Ask your operator how the crossing works, and whether your vehicle and guide continue across or you change vehicles. Book flights home for the evening of day 10, never the morning.

Two border days are the price of combining countries, so plan lighter expectations for days 4 and 8.

Step 3. Set a budget and compare packages

A private 10-day Kenya and Tanzania safari costs anywhere from mid-range to well over five figures per person. The lodge tier and the private-versus-group choice move the price most. One published luxury fly-in itinerary lists from $11,885 per person, so a couple would pay $23,770 before flights. Ask for a written quote for mid-range, because it varies by season and lodge.

What drives the price

Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro fees are a large share of the cost. Beyond that, five things decide the total:

  • Accommodation level: tented camps and lodges, mid-range or luxury.
  • Season: peak months cost more.
  • Group size: a private vehicle split among two people costs more per head than among four.
  • Flights: fly-in itineraries cost far more than road safaris.
  • Extras: balloon rides and premium spirits are often not included.

How to compare quotes

Line quotes up on inclusions, not on the headline price. Our 10-day package includes non-resident park fees, a professional driver and guide, all accommodation, all transportation, taxes and round-trip airport transfers. It also includes meals and drinks as specified in the day-by-day plan, and alcohol except premium spirits and vintage champagnes. Our 10-day safari uses our own Toyota Landcruiser 4x4s. Check that every quote states the same things.

Compare what a quote includes before you compare what it costs.

Step 4. Book, insure and pack

Booking takes four moves: confirm the itinerary, pay the deposit, sort travel insurance and entry permissions, then pack for dust and sun. We issue a booking form after you confirm a custom itinerary.

Paperwork and payment

Our deposit is 30% within 14 days of invoice, and the balance is due 21 days before arrival. We accept USD or EUR. Cancellations cost 30% up to 60 days before arrival, 75% from 60 to 30 days, and 100% inside 30 days. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory, and our safaris include AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation. Check current entry rules on official government sites for both countries, including Kenya's electronic authorization, Tanzania's visa and Tanzania's inbound travel insurance rule with its USD 44 fee.

Packing and bush basics

Pack neutral clothing, a hat, sunscreen and a light jacket for dawn drives. Avoid black and dark blue, because tsetse flies are drawn to them, especially in Tarangire and parts of the Serengeti. Bathroom stops happen at lodges, picnic sites and gate facilities. Between them, your guide picks a safe spot in the bush, so carry tissue and hand sanitizer.

Sort insurance and entry permissions early, because those are the steps that cannot be fixed at the airport.

Ready to plan your own route

A 10-day Kenya and Tanzania safari works when you choose your season first, accept two long border days, and compare quotes on inclusions. The route in this guide gives you the Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, plus Lake Nakuru, Tarangire and Amboseli for variety.

If you want this trip planned by a guide who knows both countries, start with our 10 days Best of Kenya and Tanzania safari. Send us your dates and group size, and we will confirm a day-by-day plan and a written quote.

Happy with our experience—loved having our own guide

“We had so much fun and saw wondrous numbers of lions, elephants, zebras wildebeest etc. The logistics were seamless and we loved staying in The Serengeti at Moyo Camp and Kontiki Ndutu camp. Visiting Tarangire is also highly recommended.”
