The best african safari packages for most US travelers are private, guided, all-inclusive trips of 7 to 10 days in Tanzania and Kenya. One price covers lodging, meals, park fees, a dedicated guide and a private vehicle. First-timers should start with a 7-day classic route. Couples should look at the Serengeti migration, families at a 9-day child-friendly plan, and repeat visitors at the quieter southern parks. Luxury is a lodge tier you add to any of these, not a separate trip.
Comparing packages online is frustrating. Published prices run from roughly $2,400 for a short South African reserve stay to more than $40,000 for a 15-day ultra-luxury departure. The headline number rarely tells you what is left out. Airfare from the USA is usually the biggest unknown, and "all-inclusive" means something different at every operator.
We run safaris from Arusha, so the five packages below are ones we build and guide ourselves. Passionate Guides Tanzania is a small, founder-led operator, and every trip has a private guide. Each package gets the same three checks: what it covers, who it suits, and what to know about cost and booking. That lets you compare them side by side and decide quickly.
1. Tanzania Classic Safari, 7 days
The Tanzania Classic Safari is the safest first pick among African safari packages. It is a 7-day private trip built around the northern circuit highlights: the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. You can see our full range of safari packages at Passionate Guides Tanzania.

What the package covers
A properly all-inclusive package usually bundles the items below. Check each one against any quote you receive.
- Lodges or tented camps with full-board meals
- Park, conservation and crater fees
- A private 4x4 safari vehicle and a professional guide
- Airport transfers and bottled water
Usually excluded are international flights, visas, tips, travel insurance and some drinks. Tanzania has also introduced mandatory inbound travel insurance rules, so confirm the current requirements before you fly.
An all-inclusive safari price only means something once you know the exclusions.
Who it suits
This trip fits first-time visitors, couples and small groups of friends who want classic scenery and strong wildlife in one week. Seven days is long enough to avoid rushing between parks. It is short enough to fit a normal US vacation allowance.
Cost and booking notes
Think in per-day tiers when you compare quotes. These are planning ranges for private guided East Africa safaris, not quotes.
| Tier | Typical cost per person per day | Stay style |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-range | about $400 to $650 | Lodges and tented camps |
| Luxury | about $800 to $1,500+ | Small camps, private settings |
A mid-range 7-day trip therefore lands roughly between $2,800 and $4,500 per person before flights. Flights from the USA typically connect through Europe, Doha or Addis Ababa into Kilimanjaro, and economy fares often run about $1,500 to $2,500 depending on season.
2. Serengeti Migration Safari, 8 days
Our Serengeti Migration Safari is the best of the African safari packages for couples and photographers who want the Great Migration at its most dramatic. This 8-day trip is timed for calving season.

What the package covers
The trip focuses on the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, roughly from late January through March. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth here, with thousands of calves arriving daily at the peak. Predators gather to hunt them. We use camps in the Ndutu area, such as Kontiki Ndutu, so you spend less time driving and more time with the herds.
Who it suits
It suits couples, honeymooners and serious photographers. Expect intense sightings of lions, cheetahs and hyenas. It is less suited to travelers who dislike seeing predation up close, because calving season is not gentle.
Cost and booking notes
January to March is high season, and Ndutu has limited beds, so book 9 to 12 months ahead. Luxury travellers can upgrade to small private camps. River crossings are a different event: they happen in the northern Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara from about July to October. If crossings are your dream, look at package 4.
Choose calving season for dense wildlife and newborns, and the July to October window for river crossings.
3. Family Safari in Tanzania, 9 days
The Family Safari in Tanzania is our pick among family African safari vacation packages. It runs 9 days at a gentler pace than the standard route.
What the package covers
Family trips work when the day is shaped around children. That means shorter drives, a midday rest at the lodge and room for questions at every stop. A private vehicle matters most here. Your guide can stop for an hour at a dung beetle or head back early when a child tires, with no other guests to consider.
Who it suits
It suits parents with school-age children, teenagers and multigenerational groups. Minimum ages for game drives and stays vary by lodge, so tell us your children's ages at the start, and we will choose accordingly. Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic about malaria prevention and vaccines well before departure.
Cost and booking notes
Many lodges discount children who share a room with their parents, but the rules differ by property. School holidays from June to August and December are busy, so reserve early. The dry season from July to October gives the easiest wildlife viewing. A family-sized vehicle and one guide often make the per-person cost better than two separate rooms in two cars.
Pace and flexibility, not luxury, decide whether a family safari works.
4. Best of Kenya and Tanzania, 10 days
Our 10-day Best of Kenya and Tanzania trip is the strongest of the multi-country African safari packages. It is mid-range, with luxury lodge options on request. We also offer an 8-day Kenya and Tanzania version.

What the package covers
You combine Kenya's Maasai Mara and Amboseli with Tanzania's Serengeti, so you see two ecosystems and two park systems on one itinerary. One operator handles both countries, which means one guide team, one invoice and no handoffs. Kenya requires an electronic travel authorisation before arrival, so we flag that early in planning.
Who it suits
It suits travellers who are still deciding between Kenya and Tanzania and those who want variety. Time it for July to October, and you can catch the Mara River crossings. Amboseli adds big elephant herds with Kilimanjaro as the backdrop on clear mornings.
Cost and booking notes
Plan on two sets of park fees and possibly a regional flight or border transfer. From the USA, the clean routing is often an open-jaw ticket: fly into Nairobi and home from Kilimanjaro, or the reverse. Price it as one ticket rather than two one-ways. Mid-range lodges keep the budget sensible, and the luxury tier raises the nightly rate mainly in the Mara and Serengeti.
Fly into one country and out of the other so you never backtrack.
5. Tanzania Southern Circuit, 10 days
The Tanzania Southern Circuit is the African safari package for travellers who want empty roads and wild country. It covers Selous and Ruaha over 10 days.
What the package covers
Selous offers boat safaris on the Rufiji River and walking safaris with an armed ranger. Ruaha brings large elephant herds, strong lion numbers and dry, rugged scenery. Parks here are far larger and less visited than the northern circuit, and the two are usually linked by a light-aircraft flight rather than a long drive.
Who it suits
It suits repeat safari-goers, keen birders and anyone who dislikes seeing many vehicles at a sighting. First-timers can enjoy it too, but they may prefer the denser game viewing of the north first.
Cost and booking notes
Remote camps and internal flights mean the per-day cost is often higher than the northern circuit, and many camps here are small and upscale. The dry season from June to October is best. Some camps close during the heavy rains of April and May, so confirm dates before you build a trip around them.
The south costs more per day, but you share the park with almost no one.
