6 Serengeti Safari Packages Compared by Length and Cost

The best Serengeti safari packages are private, guided by a local operator, and long enough to reach the park without rushing. For a first trip, pick the 7-day Classic. If you want calving season between December and April, pick the 8-day Ndutu itinerary. If you want two countries in one trip, choose a Kenya and Tanzania combination of 6, 8 or 10 days. With only a few days, take the 6-day Tanzania route and accept a tighter pace.

Comparing packages is harder than it should be. Listed prices run from about $720 for a four-day group camping trip to more than $4,000 per person for a week of luxury. Day counts hide arrival days, long drives and extras. Two packages at the same price can include very different things.

This article compares six private itineraries from Passionate Guides Tanzania, an Arusha-based operator founded in 2020. It covers route, accommodation and the traveler each one suits. The last section explains what Serengeti safaris cost across the market and how to check an operator before you pay. Market prices are third-party benchmarks, not our quotes.

1. 6-Day Tanzania Wildlife & Cultural Safari

The 6-day Tanzania Wildlife & Cultural Safari is the shortest package here that still puts you in the Serengeti with a private guide. It suits travelers who want wildlife and local culture in one compact trip.

6-Day Tanzania Wildlife & Cultural Safari

Route and pace

Arusha is both the start and the finish. The route links Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, with cultural stops between game drives. Guiding is private with flexible pacing, so you choose how long to stay at a sighting.

  • Duration: 6 days
  • Start and finish: Arusha
  • Parks: Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater
  • Guiding: private, flexible pacing

Six days work only when drive time stays low, so ask how many hours you spend in the vehicle each day.

Stay and cost

Lodges and camps are handpicked for location. Location beats star rating in the Serengeti, because a camp near the action saves hours of driving. Ask which camp you get each night.

Comparable private six-day mid-range itineraries are listed at around $1,800 per person, and luxury versions reach about $3,600. Treat those as benchmarks and request a written quote for your dates.

Who it suits

Pick it if you have a week or less and want the Serengeti and the crater without a long itinerary. The cultural stops add variety between parks.

Skip it if the Great Migration is your main goal. Six days leave little room to follow the herds, and the 8-day Ndutu package below is built for that.

2. 6-Day Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari

This six-day Kenya and Tanzania mid-range safari pairs the Masai Mara with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater under one professional private guide. It is the quickest way to see both halves of the same wildlife ecosystem.

Route and pace

The trip starts and finishes in Arusha and runs through the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Guiding is private with flexible pacing. Any cross-border trip loses time at the frontier, so ask how the transfer is handled and how much of a day it uses.

  • Duration: 6 days
  • Start and finish: Arusha
  • Parks: Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater
  • Level: mid-range

Two countries in six days is possible, but only a clear transfer plan keeps it relaxed.

Stay and cost

Lodges and camps are handpicked for location. A trip across two countries involves two sets of park fees, so ask whether the quote lists Kenyan and Tanzanian fees separately.

Start from the roughly $1,800 benchmark for six-day private mid-range trips. Then ask the operator how the Kenyan leg changes the figure.

Who it suits

Choose it if you want to compare the two famous parks yourself. The Serengeti is far larger and usually less crowded than the smaller Masai Mara, so seeing both shows you which one you would return to.

Skip it if you dislike moving around. Six days across two countries means frequent changes of camp and little downtime.

3. 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

The 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari is a seven-day private guided safari. It gives you a full week of private guiding through Northern Tanzania's national parks and tribal cultures, without a border crossing.

7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

Route and pace

Arusha is the start and end point. Private guiding with flexible pacing lets you spend an extra morning where the wildlife is best. Ask for the day-by-day park order before you commit.

  • Duration: 7 days
  • Start and finish: Arusha
  • Accommodation: midrange lodges, luxury lodges or luxury tented camps
  • Guiding: private, flexible pacing

A seven-day private safari is where the Serengeti stops feeling rushed.

Stay and cost

You choose between midrange lodges, luxury lodges and luxury tented camps. Large lodges close out the bush at night and suit nervous first-timers. Small tented camps give a stronger bush atmosphere, with wildlife often passing through after dark.

Listed private seven-day luxury packages run about $3,700 to $4,400 per person. A midrange week should price between the six-day and eight-day benchmarks in this article.

Who it suits

First-time visitors, couples and small groups fit best. You get one operator, one guide and one country, with a lodge level that matches your budget.

If you want to see the migration, take the 8-day package below instead. The Classic is built around northern circuit wildlife in general, not one herd location.

4. 8 Days Southern Serengeti Migration Safari

This 8-day southern Serengeti migration safari is the package for calving season. It visits Tarangire, the Serengeti and Lake Ndutu over eight days, timed for the southern plains.

8 Days Southern Serengeti Migration Safari

Route and pace

The route links Tarangire, the Serengeti and Lake Ndutu. Ndutu is the main target from December to April, and February is the best month to witness calving. Rain shifts the herds from year to year, so your guide's daily reading of the plains matters more than a fixed plan.

  • Duration: 8 days
  • Parks: Tarangire, Serengeti, Lake Ndutu
  • Main Ndutu season: December to April
  • Calving peak: February

Book this one for December to April and treat February as the peak.

Stay and cost

Camps near Ndutu put you close to the herds at dawn. Our camp options include Kontiki Ndutu, and migration camps fill early, so reserve months ahead.

Listed eight-day mid-range Great Migration packages run about $2,860 to $3,320 per person. Safari high season runs from July to March, so calving-season dates sit in the expensive half of the year.

Who it suits

Photographers, predator fans and anyone who wants newborn wildebeest alongside lion and cheetah action fit this itinerary. The southern plains give the densest predator activity of the Serengeti's seasons.

Skip it for a June or July trip. The herds are then in the Western Corridor, and the calving plains hold far fewer wildebeest.

5. 8 Days Kenya & Tanzania Safari

This is our value-for-money cross-border package, the 8-day Kenya and Tanzania safari. It runs eight days at a mid-range level through the Masai Mara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire.

8 Days Kenya & Tanzania Safari

Route and pace

The destinations are Nairobi, the Masai Mara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, a Mto wa Mbu village visit and Tarangire. The route lists Nairobi first, so check where the trip starts and ends before you book flights.

The balloon safari is the big optional extra. It flies over Central Serengeti on day 5 and costs $550 per person, booked and paid with us before the trip. Balloon flights across the market typically cost $500 to $1,000.

  • Duration: 8 days
  • Level: mid-range
  • Balloon: Central Serengeti, day 5, $550 per person

Decide on the balloon before you pay, because it is booked and paid in advance.

Stay and cost

Accommodation is mid-range, so ask for the lodge or camp name for every night in writing. Start from the eight-day benchmark above, about $2,860 to $3,320 per person.

A couple who adds the balloon pays an extra $1,100, which is $550 each. That puts the extra on top of the package price, not inside it.

Who it suits

Pick it if you want the Mara, the Serengeti and a cultural village stop in one trip, at a mid-range level. Tarangire adds elephant viewing at the end of the route.

Skip it if you want the calving plains. This route is built around the northern and central parks, not Ndutu.

6. 10 Days Best of Kenya & Tanzania Safari

The 10-day mid-range Kenya and Tanzania safari is the most complete option here. It covers six destinations at a mid-range level: Lake Nakuru, the Masai Mara, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Amboseli.

10 Days Best of Kenya & Tanzania Safari

Route and pace

Ten days spreads the parks out, so game drives are not squeezed between long transfers. You see Kenya's Lake Nakuru and Amboseli as well as Tanzania's northern circuit. International flights go to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, which you book yourself.

  • Duration: 10 days
  • Level: mid-range
  • Destinations: Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Amboseli
  • Flights: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Ten days is long enough to treat the Serengeti as one stop among six, not as a rushed centerpiece.

Stay and cost

Mid-range lodges and camps are the standard. Listed ten-day private mid-range packages sit near $3,260 to $3,310 per person, about $326 to $331 per day. The daily rate is lower than most shorter trips because fixed costs spread over more days.

An 11-day listing with a Zanzibar beach extension runs about $5,370 to $5,920 per person. Add beach time only if the budget allows.

Who it suits

It fits travelers with ten days or more who want two countries and several habitats on one itinerary. Amboseli suits those who want elephants with Kilimanjaro in the background.

Skip it if you have limited time or dislike long travel days. The 7-day Classic gives the Serengeti with far less movement.

How to compare package prices and operators

Compare Serengeti safari packages on price per day, inclusions and operator track record, in that order. A headline total means nothing until you know what sits inside it.

Price ranges by comfort level

Market rules of thumb put a camping safari at $150 to $200 per person per day and luxury from about $500 per person per day. Published listings fit that pattern. These are marketplace figures for comparable packages, not our quotes.

Package style (listed) Listed price per person Per day
4-day group camping $720 to $765 $180 to $191
4-day group, mid-range lodges $1,280 $320
6-day private, mid-range $1,799 $300
10-day private, mid-range $3,263 to $3,313 $326 to $331
8-day private, mid-range $2,859 to $3,319 $357 to $415
7-day private, luxury $3,701 to $4,388 $529 to $627

A couple on the eight-day mid-range benchmark pays about $5,720 to $6,640 before international flights. Add guide tips of roughly $10 to $25 per person per day, or $160 to $400 for two over eight days.

Divide every package price by its number of days, and compare that figure, not the headline total.

What the quote must include

Ask for these items in writing before you compare totals:

  • Park and concession fees, which run roughly $100 to $150 per person per night inside the park
  • Private or shared vehicle, and the seats per vehicle (group tours in listings cap at 6 or 7)
  • Named accommodation for each night
  • Meals, drinking water and any drinks that cost extra
  • What is excluded, usually flights, visas, tips and optional extras

Transfers matter too. Arusha to central Serengeti is about 300 km, at least six hours on rough roads. Fly-in packages skip that day but add the flight cost.

How to vet an operator

Read recent reviews on Tripadvisor and SafariBookings, and count them. We have 35 Tripadvisor reviews and 53 on SafariBookings. Ask who owns the vehicles. We run our own Toyota Landcruiser 4x4s.

Then compare payment and cancellation terms. Ours are a 30% deposit within 14 days of invoice and the balance 42 days before arrival. Cancellation costs 30% up to 60 days out, 75% from 60 to 30 days, and 100% inside 30 days. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory with us, and AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation is included on safaris and treks.

Choosing between these packages

Choose by days and month. Six days is tight but workable, seven days is the safe first-timer choice, and eight days fits calving season from December to April. For two countries, take the 6-day, 8-day or 10-day Kenya and Tanzania combinations. Whatever you pick, divide the price by the days and check what the quote includes.

Tell us your dates, group size and comfort level, and send an enquiry to Passionate Guides Tanzania for a written itinerary and quote, starting with the 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari if you want the safe first-timer choice.
