8 Luxury Tanzania Safari Itineraries and Per-Person Costs

A luxury African safari Tanzania trip works when it gets three things right. The region matches your travel month, you travel with a private guide and vehicle, and the quote names every lodge and states what is included. For a first trip, the 7-day northern circuit (item 1) is the safest pick. Repeat visitors who want quiet should look at the southern parks (item 4). February travelers should plan around the calving plains (item 3). Couples ready to splurge will find their match in the private-reserve and Zanzibar options (items 6 and 7).

The hard part is comparing. Operator sites quote "from" prices on different bases. Some are per person per night, some are for a 10-day package with flights, and the lodge names often change between quote and booking. You end up with ten tabs open and no way to tell whether $7,000 and $20,000 are even buying the same trip.

This article lines up eight luxury itineraries. Each one comes with the lodges that set the benchmark for that region, a realistic per-person cost, and the best months to go. A cost breakdown and an operator checklist follow. We write from Arusha. Passionate Guides Tanzania is locally owned, and our founder, Beatus Fungomali, has guided across Tanzania since 2012. Where an itinerary is ours, we say so. Where a lodge belongs to another brand, we describe it as a benchmark for its tier, so you can judge any quote you receive.

1. Private 7-day northern circuit safari

How the trip works

7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

Our 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari is a private guided trip through northern Tanzania's national parks and tribal cultures. It starts and ends in Arusha, with stays in midrange or luxury lodges and luxury tented camps. The northern circuit holds some of the densest big game in Africa. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire are its core parks, so confirm the exact park list in your quote. Your guide sets the pace. You can stay with a lion pride for an hour or skip a stop that does not interest you.

Seven days is the shortest northern circuit I recommend. The Serengeti is a long drive from Arusha, and anything shorter turns the trip into a transfer schedule. At the luxury tier, two lodges set the benchmark. Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti has a working waterhole below its pool and deck. Tarangire Treetops has treehouse suites built around baobab and marula trees. Ask for the named lodge for every night before you pay a deposit.

Seven days is the shortest northern circuit that does not feel like a transfer schedule.

Cost, timing and who it suits

This is the trip for travelers who want the classic Tanzania highlights with a private guide and a clear route. The dry months, June to October, concentrate animals around water. The green season, November to March, brings afternoon showers, less dust, fewer vehicles and lower rates.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, couples, families who want a private guide
  • Best months: June to October for dry-season game, November to March for quieter parks
  • Benchmark cost: six nights at the classic luxury band of $600 to $1,200 per person per night come to $3,600 to $7,200 per person
  • Our price: quoted per trip on request, because it depends on lodge tier and dates

2. Short 6-day luxury safari

How the trip works

6-Day Tanzania Wildlife & Cultural Safari

A luxury short safari in Tanzania is five nights, and the best version uses them on the three parks that matter most. Our 6-Day Tanzania Wildlife & Cultural Safari runs through Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, with cultural stops and a finish in Arusha. It is private, with flexible pacing and handpicked lodges and camps chosen for location. Lake Manyara is known for its tree-climbing lions and flocks of flamingo, and the crater gives you a dense concentration of wildlife in one morning.

The trade-off is Serengeti time. On six days you get fewer nights on the plains, so ask whether your lodges are close to the areas where animals are that month. The published trip does not state a lodge tier, so tell us at enquiry that you want the luxury level. Then check the named lodges against the benchmarks in item 1.

On a short safari, location beats lodge size, so pick camps close to the animals.

Cost, timing and who it suits

This itinerary suits people with a tight calendar who still want the big names. A shorter trip also lets you spend more per night without the total becoming extreme.

  • Best for: couples and families with a week or less, travelers who want culture alongside wildlife
  • Best months: June to October, or January to March for quieter parks
  • Benchmark cost: five nights at the classic luxury band come to $3,000 to $6,000 per person
  • Our price: quoted on request once the lodge tier is set

3. Calving season safari in the southern Serengeti

How the trip works

A newborn wildebeest calf stands beside its mother on a green grassy plain with herd members behind them.

The calving safari puts you on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Lake Ndutu when thousands of wildebeest calves are born each day. Our 8-day southern Serengeti migration safari visits Tarangire, the Serengeti and Lake Ndutu. Lake Ndutu is the main target from December to April, and February is the best month to witness the calving. Predators follow the herds, so lion, cheetah and hyena activity is intense.

Calving is the best luxury Tanzania safari choice for photographers, because the light is soft, the plains are green and vehicles are fewer than at the river crossings. The herds follow the rains, so their exact position shifts each year. Ask your operator for a flexible camp plan. For a private-concession benchmark, look at Mwiba Lodge. It sits in its own reserve on the southern edge of the Serengeti ecosystem and allows off-road driving, walks and night drives that the national park does not.

Calving season rewards flexibility, because the herds follow the rain and not your calendar.

Cost, timing and who it suits

Book early. Camps in prime positions fill about a year ahead. The trip suits travelers who prefer dramatic predator action to river-crossing crowds.

  • Best for: photographers, returning visitors, travelers who want the migration in February
  • Best months: December to April, with February the peak for calving
  • Benchmark cost: seven nights at the classic luxury band come to $4,200 to $8,400 per person
  • Our price: quoted on request, and dates matter more than the lodge name

4. Southern circuit tented safari: Nyerere and Ruaha

How the trip works

The southern circuit is the quiet side of Tanzania, and it is where intimate tented camps earn their price. Our 7-day Selous and Ruaha safari is a luxury tented safari in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) and Ruaha National Park, far removed from daily life. Nyerere centers on the Rufiji River. That means boat safaris, hippo pods and good walking. Ruaha is baobab country with large lion prides, big elephant herds and a fraction of the vehicles you see in the Serengeti.

The two parks are usually joined by a light-aircraft flight, not a long drive. That adds cost, but it keeps the trip to a week. For benchmarks, Jabali Ridge in Ruaha has eight suites among boulders and baobabs. Sand Rivers Selous sits on a bend of the Rufiji and is known for its boat and walking safaris. Expect the camp to be unshowy and the guiding to be strong.

The southern circuit trades crowds for silence, and the price reflects the remoteness.

Cost, timing and who it suits

This is the pick when you want a luxury safari without other vehicles in sight. It also works well as a second trip after the Serengeti.

  • Best for: repeat safari-goers, walkers, photographers, couples who want solitude
  • Best months: dry season, June to October, when animals gather at the rivers
  • Benchmark cost: six nights at the premium band of $900 to $2,000 per person per night come to $5,400 to $12,000 per person
  • Our price: quoted on request, and internal flights change the total

5. Northern Serengeti river crossing safari

How the trip works

The Mara River crossings happen in the far northern Serengeti, roughly July to October, and this itinerary builds the whole trip around them. The northern Serengeti includes the Lamai area, a wedge between the Mara River and the Kenyan border with very few camps. Benchmarks here include Sayari Camp near Kogatende, a refined 15-tent camp that sits close to the crossing ground, and the small camps in the Lamai triangle.

Before you book any camp, ask how far it is from the known crossing points. A camp an hour's drive away means you spend your mornings in the vehicle. Allow at least four nights. Crossings are unpredictable. Herds gather at the bank and then turn back, sometimes for days. A promise of a guaranteed crossing is a red flag. A good guide reads the herd's mood and positions you early.

Crossings cannot be scheduled, so buy time at the river and not a promise.

Cost, timing and who it suits

This is the most photography-driven option on the list. We do not publish a fixed itinerary for it. We build it as a tailored trip, so ask for it by name.

  • Best for: photographers, wildlife purists, repeat visitors
  • Best months: July to October, with camps booking up to a year ahead
  • Benchmark cost: four nights at the classic luxury band come to $2,400 to $4,800 per person
  • Our price: quoted on request for a tailored itinerary

6. Private reserve stay in the western Serengeti

How the trip works

The western Serengeti has a private-estate option that answers the question of the most luxurious safari in Tanzania. Singita Sasakwa Lodge sits on a hill in the Grumeti Reserve, a 350,000-acre private concession bordering the Serengeti National Park. The lodge is built as an Edwardian manor with deep verandas and a wine cellar. The cottages have private heated pools and butler service.

The real advantage is access. A private reserve allows off-road driving, walking safaris, horse riding and night drives that the national park does not. Guest numbers are strictly limited, so you often drive without another vehicle in sight. The migration passes through the Grumeti corridor between May and July. Other private options in the area include Mila Tented Camp, a five-tent camp near the Grumeti River, and Singita Faru Faru, which has year-round game viewing at its waterhole.

A private reserve buys you freedom to leave the track, and that is what the flagship price pays for.

Cost, timing and who it suits

Because the reserve has resident game year-round, the migration month matters less here than elsewhere. Pair it with a northern circuit trip like item 1, so you see both the national park and the private estate.

  • Best for: bucket-list occasions, honeymoons, couples, families who want maximum privacy
  • Best months: May to July for the Grumeti corridor, June to October for dry-season viewing
  • Benchmark cost: three nights at the flagship band of $1,800 to $3,500+ per person per night come to $5,400 to $10,500+ per person
  • Our price: quoted on request as part of a tailored itinerary

7. Safari and Zanzibar beach combination

How the trip works

A luxury safari in Tanzania and Zanzibar is the classic bush-then-beach trip. You spend five or six nights on safari, then three or four on the coast. The benchmark at the top is &Beyond Mnemba Island, a private coral atoll off the northeast tip of Zanzibar with twelve barefoot bandas and a protected marine reserve for snorkeling and diving. Nothing else is on the island.

You do not need the flagship tier for a good beach stay. Zanzibar has resorts at every budget, and many travelers combine a top-tier safari with a mid-priced Zanzibar beach holiday. The practical point is the connection. The flight from the bush usually involves a transfer, and light aircraft carry soft bags with a modest weight limit. Tell your operator at the first enquiry that you want a beach finish, so your last bush night sits near an airstrip and not a three-hour drive away.

End the safari near an airstrip, because the beach starts the moment you stop driving.

Cost, timing and who it suits

Zanzibar's long rains run roughly March to May. That is when beach stays cost least and feel least pleasant. For sun, aim for June to October or January and February.

  • Best for: honeymooners, couples, divers, anyone who wants a rest after a full safari
  • Best months: June to October, January to February
  • Benchmark cost: three nights at the premium band of $900 to $2,000 per person per night come to $2,700 to $6,000 per person, with flights extra
  • Our price: the safari portion is quoted on request

8. Kenya and Tanzania combination safari

How the trip works

A combination safari links the Masai Mara in Kenya with the Serengeti in Tanzania, which are one continuous ecosystem. Our 6-Day Kenya & Tanzania Mid-Range Safari runs through the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, starting and finishing in Arusha, with a professional private guide. It is published as a mid-range trip. For a luxury version, we tailor the lodges and camps, so ask for it when you enquire.

The most memorable add-on is a balloon flight over Central Serengeti National Park. It is offered on day 5 of our 8-day Kenya and Tanzania safari for $550 per person, booked and paid with us before the trip. You see the plains from the air at sunrise, which gives you a sense of scale that a vehicle cannot. If you want more time in each country, the 8-day version gives you room to breathe.

Two countries in six days is possible, but eight days lets you actually enjoy both.

Cost, timing and who it suits

This itinerary suits travelers who want to compare the two sides of the migration ecosystem in one trip. Kenya and Tanzania camps are priced separately, so the totals below are a rough guide only.

  • Best for: first-timers who want the Mara and the Serengeti, couples, families
  • Best months: July to October for the river crossings, January to March for calving
  • Benchmark cost: five nights at the classic luxury band come to $3,000 to $6,000 per person, or $3,550 to $6,550 with the balloon flight
  • Our price: quoted on request, with the balloon at $550 per person

What a luxury Tanzania safari costs per person

Rate bands by lodge tier

A luxury Tanzania safari typically costs $600 to $3,500+ per person per night at peak season, depending on the lodge tier. Booking specialists publish similar bands, and the table below shows how the lodges in this article fall into them. The bands are estimates for July to October, based on double occupancy.

Tier Example lodges Per person per night
Flagship Singita Sasakwa, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge $1,800 to $3,500+
Premium Four Seasons Serengeti, Jabali Ridge, Sand Rivers Selous, Mnemba Island $900 to $2,000
Classic luxury Mwiba Lodge, Tarangire Treetops, Sayari Camp $600 to $1,200
Classic value Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge $300 to $600

These rates are normally fully inclusive of accommodation, meals, game drives, park fees and most drinks. Light-aircraft transfers are usually extra. Published starting prices for 10-day packages run from about $6,400 for small-group departures that include flights, to about $8,900 for bespoke private trips, to above $20,000 at the most exclusive operators. Those figures are not comparable until you check what each includes.

Compare the per-night rate and what it includes, never the headline package price alone.

A worked example for seven nights

Take a couple on a 7-night northern circuit. They spend two nights at a classic luxury camp in Tarangire, three nights at a premium Serengeti lodge, and two nights on the crater rim. Use the midpoint of each band.

  • Tarangire, 2 nights at $900: $1,800
  • Serengeti, 3 nights at $1,450: $4,350
  • Crater rim at flagship level, 2 nights at $2,650: $5,300
  • Total: $11,450 per person, or $22,900 for two

Swap the flagship crater-rim lodge for a value lodge at $450 midpoint, and the two nights cost $900. The total drops to $7,050 per person, or $14,100 for two. One lodge choice moves the trip by more than $4,000 per person. International flights, visas, travel insurance and tips come on top.

What the price should include

Your quote should itemize the following. If a line is missing, ask.

  • Park and concession fees
  • A private guide and vehicle for the whole trip
  • All meals, plus most drinks at the lodges
  • Airport transfers, plus internal flights if the route needs them
  • Medical evacuation cover. Ours includes AMREF Flying Doctors on safaris and treks, excluding day trips.
  • Excluded in most quotes: international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, premium drinks

How to choose a luxury safari operator

Five checks before you pay a deposit

No single Tanzania safari company is the best for everyone. The right one passes five checks. Run them before you pay anything.

  1. Named lodges. The quote lists the lodge or camp for every night, not "luxury lodge or similar."
  2. A private vehicle and guide. Ask who owns the vehicles. We use our own well maintained Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4s.
  3. A local, licensed operator. Ask for the company's Tanzanian license and who will actually answer your WhatsApp messages once you are in the park.
  4. Independent reviews. Read recent ones on Tripadvisor and SafariBookings, and look for your travel month. We have a 4.9 rating from 35 Tripadvisor reviews and 53 reviews on SafariBookings.
  5. Itemized inclusions. The quote lists what is paid, what is not, and what happens in a medical emergency.

Payment and cancellation terms to compare

Terms differ widely, and they matter more than the price once a camp is sold out. Ask for them in writing. For reference, our booking terms are a 30% deposit within 14 days of invoice, with the balance due 42 days before arrival. Cancellation costs 30% of the total up to 60 days before arrival, 75% from 60 to 30 days, and 100% at 30 days or less, for no-shows and for late arrivals. Unused services are non-refundable.

Strict terms like these are common because lodges hold your dates a year ahead and cannot resell them late. That is exactly why comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for our bookings. Check the current entry requirements for Tanzania, including inbound insurance rules, before you travel.

Picking your trip

A good luxury safari in Tanzania comes down to matching the region to your month, choosing a private guide, and reading the quote line by line. First-timers do well on the northern circuit. February travelers belong on the calving plains. Quiet seekers should look south, and honeymooners can add the coast. The lodge tier moves the price more than anything else, so decide that first.

If you want one of the trips above built around your dates, request a custom itinerary from Passionate Guides Tanzania, starting with our private 7-day Tanzania safari. Tell us your travel month, group size and lodge tier, and we will send a named-lodge quote.
