Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Packages: 5 Picks by Budget

The best Tanzania safari and Zanzibar packages combine five to seven nights on the northern safari circuit with three to five nights on the coast, one flight between the two, and park fees in the price. Budget travelers do well on a shared trip of 5 to 9 days at about $1,200 to $1,500 per person. Couples and families usually choose a private mid-range trip of 8 to 11 days, roughly $1,800 to $3,500 each. Honeymooners should look at luxury trips from about $4,150, and beach-first travelers can start on the island instead.

The hard part is comparing them. Operators quote per person for different group sizes, some include the flight to the island and some do not, and "all-inclusive" means something different on safari than at a beach resort. This article sets out five package formats by budget, with routes, prices and who each one fits. Then it explains what to check before you pay.

We are Passionate Guides Tanzania, a private safari operator in Arusha, and our founder has guided northern circuit trips since 2012. The prices below are published ranges for comparable trips, not quotes. Use them to set your budget, then confirm the details with whoever you book.

1. Budget group safari with a beach finish

What the itinerary looks like

A budget package puts you in a shared vehicle for a short northern circuit, then moves you to Zanzibar for the last days. Group size is the first thing to check, because the listed examples cap groups at 7 people, and a vehicle shared by more feels very different. The two common versions are:

  • 5-day group version: Arusha, Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, then Zanzibar.
  • 9-day camping version: Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, then Zanzibar, with camping and guesthouse stays.

Cost and who it suits

Expect about $1,226 per person for the 5-day version and $1,429 to $1,474 for the 9-day camping version, before international flights. That works out to roughly $160 to $245 per day, which matches the usual $150 to $250 budget safari band. A couple on the 9-day trip pays about $2,860 to $2,950 together.

This format suits solo travelers and couples who accept a fixed schedule, shared game drives and simpler rooms. It is a poor fit if you want to stay out an extra hour for photography or you plan a family safari and Zanzibar beach holiday with young children. On the 5-day trip, ask how many nights you actually get on the island, because the safari takes most of the time.

Budget packages work when you trade a fixed schedule and a shared vehicle for a lower daily rate.

2. Mid-range private safari and beach in 8 or 9 days

What the itinerary looks like

7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

This is the compact private option: your own vehicle and guide, comfortable lodges or tented camps, and a beach stay at the end. The 8-day versions differ a lot, so read the park list, not the title. One common 8-day package covers Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar with no Serengeti. A 9-day version adds the Serengeti and a Stone Town visit before the beach.

Cost and who it suits

Per person, an 8-day package without the Serengeti runs about $2,290 for two travelers and $1,830 each for four to six. Versions with the Serengeti cost more: about $2,633 to $2,700 for 9 days and $2,935 to $3,032 for 8 days with a fly-in. A couple on the $2,290 version pays $4,580 together, and a group of four at $1,830 each pays $7,320.

It suits first-timers with about a week and a half who want a private guide without luxury prices. If the Serengeti is the reason you are going, pick the version that includes it, even at the higher price. Our own 7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari shows the kind of safari leg this format is built on: private guiding, midrange or luxury lodges and camps, starting and ending in Arusha.

In an 8-day package, check whether the Serengeti is on the route before you compare prices.

3. The 11-day classic with Serengeti and beach

What the itinerary looks like

A five-step route graphic running from Arusha arrival through three northern parks to Zanzibar beach.

Eleven days is the sweet spot because it gives the northern circuit room and still leaves a proper beach stay. A typical routing is an arrival day, Tarangire, two days in the central Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, a flight to Zanzibar, three days on the island, then departure. That sequence puts the long drives early and the rest at the end, when you want it.

Cost and who it suits

Published prices range from about $2,180 per person for a group of six, with the Zanzibar flight included, to $3,510 each for two travelers. Four to six people on one comparable package pay about $2,970 each. A couple at $3,510 pays $7,020 together, and a family of four at $2,970 each pays $11,880. That is about $320 per person per day for two travelers, a solid mid-range rate.

This is the package we would point most first-time visitors toward. It matches the 8 to 12 day length most specialists call ideal, it covers the four headline northern attractions, and it leaves real beach time. Confirm whether the island flight is in the price, since it can add around $200 per person.

For most first-time visitors, 11 days is the length where the safari and the beach both get enough time.

4. Luxury and honeymoon packages of 10 to 12 days

What the itinerary looks like

A luxury tented suite with a deck overlooking savanna, where zebras graze in the distance at sunset.

Luxury packages keep the same northern circuit but upgrade every night: luxury lodges and tented camps in the parks, then a beachfront resort. The 10-day versions usually run Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and the coast. The 12-day versions add Lake Manyara and a stay on Zanzibar's north coast, around Nungwi. Honeymoon editions add touches such as a private dinner or a suite upgrade, so ask what is actually included.

Cost and who it suits

Prices run from about $4,150 to $6,740 per person. Examples include 10 days at $4,160 to $4,273, 12 days at $4,151 to $4,680, and a premium all-inclusive 12-day honeymoon at $5,620. At $5,620 each, a couple pays $11,240, or about $468 per person per day, above the roughly $400 daily figure that marks high-end safaris.

These packages suit honeymooners, anniversaries and anyone who wants the best rooms at the best locations. On Zanzibar, "all-inclusive" often means meals and some drinks at the resort, while excursions such as a dhow cruise or a Stone Town tour are usually paid separately. Ask for the inclusions list in writing.

Pay for luxury where it counts: the Serengeti camp location and the beach resort, not an extra category label.

5. Zanzibar-first and fly-in packages

What the itinerary looks like

Some packages start on the island and fly you to the parks. You land at Zanzibar, fly to the Serengeti, drive through the northern Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and finish in Arusha. This can remove an internal connecting flight, and it suits you if your international ticket already goes through Zanzibar. Three-day Serengeti trips from the island are also listed, which helps if you are already on the coast and want one big park.

Cost and who it suits

A 7-day private mid-range migration safari from Zanzibar costs about $2,993 per person, so a couple pays $5,986. A 4-day luxury Ruaha trip from the island costs about $4,186 per person, around $1,050 per day, because remote parks need flights and lodges are priced to match.

Choose this format if you are beach-first, short on time, or a returning visitor. Treat any "one-day safari from Zanzibar" with caution, because flight hours eat into the hours on the ground. If your goal is the northern circuit's classic route, a package that starts in Arusha usually gives you more time in the parks.

Starting in Zanzibar saves a connection only if your international flight already lands on the island.

What all-inclusive covers and how to compare it

What "all-inclusive" covers and leaves out

On safari, all-inclusive means the core costs of the safari are in the price, not that everything is free. A package from Passionate Guides Tanzania, for example, includes game drives, accommodation, park fees, a professional guide and ground transport. Typical exclusions to check on any package:

  • International flights, which we do not book for you.
  • Visas, tips and personal spending.
  • Zanzibar excursions and resort drinks, unless stated.
  • Travel insurance, which we require, with AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation included on safaris and treks.

Flights, ferries and the best time to go

Most packages fly you between the mainland and Zanzibar. The flight takes about an hour, and a one-way Arusha to Zanzibar ticket averages around $200 per person. A ferry from Dar es Salaam takes under an hour on the fastest services, but you would first need to reach Dar, so it is rarely used for safari extensions.

For timing, June to October is the dry season on the mainland and the best weather on the island. April is Zanzibar's rainiest month, with March and May also wet, and high-season packages can cost double the low-season price. The wet months are the cheapest, if you can accept some rain.

Prices side by side

Package format Length Price per person
Budget group safari and beach 5 to 9 days $1,226 to $1,474
Mid-range private 8 to 9 days $1,830 to $3,032
11-day classic 11 days $2,181 to $3,510
Luxury and honeymoon 10 to 12 days $4,151 to $6,740
Zanzibar-first fly-in 4 to 7 days $2,993 to $4,186

Before you commit, ask each operator five questions: Is the island flight included? How many people share a vehicle? Which parks and how many nights in each? What is excluded? What are the payment and cancellation terms? Our own booking terms are a 30% deposit within 14 days of invoice and the balance 21 days before arrival, so compare that against any other quote.

A package is only cheap or expensive once you know whether the island flight, park fees and transfers are in it.

Choosing your package

Pick by budget and time. Shared budget trips start near $1,200, a private mid-range trip of 8 to 11 days lands between about $1,800 and $3,500, and luxury or honeymoon trips run from about $4,150. Start with the safari, give the beach at least three nights, and ask in writing what is included before you pay.

If you want a private guide to plan the safari leg of your trip, start with our 7-day classic safari in Tanzania, then send an enquiry to Passionate Guides Tanzania with your dates, budget and group size, and ask how a beach stay could fit around it.

Happy with our experience—loved having our own guide

“We had so much fun and saw wondrous numbers of lions, elephants, zebras wildebeest etc. The logistics were seamless and we loved staying in The Serengeti at Moyo Camp and Kontiki Ndutu camp. Visiting Tarangire is also highly recommended.”
