5 Wildebeest Migration Tours: Routes, Seasons and Lengths

The best wildebeest migration tours match your travel month to where the herds are, give you at least six to eight days on the ground, and put you in a private vehicle with a guide who reads the herds each morning. For calving season in the southern Serengeti, pick the 8-day Ndutu trip between December and April. For Mara River crossings, pick a Kenya and Tanzania trip between July and October: the 8-day for value, the 10-day for breadth, or the 6-day if your time is short. If you want culture alongside wildlife, the 6-day Tanzania trip is the one.

The problem is that most listings show the same river-crossing photo and say little about timing. The herds follow rain, not a calendar. A tour that looks perfect on paper can leave you in the wrong park for your month. This article starts with a month-by-month guide to where the herds are, then covers five tours by route, season, length and the kind of traveler each suits. It ends with what these trips cost and how to book one.

Passionate Guides Tanzania is a founder-led safari operator based in Arusha, and it runs all five tours below. That means we can tell you what each trip does well and where it falls short. Our founder has guided across Tanzania since 2012, and the advice here comes from that experience. If a different tour fits your dates better, we will say so.

When and where the herds are, month by month

The herds circle the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem clockwise all year, so the right month depends on what you want to see. Up to two million wildebeest, zebra and antelope follow the rain and fresh grass. That is why a great wildebeest migration safari has no official start or finish, only a season that suits your goal.

The herds follow the rain, not the calendar, so treat every date as a range.

The year-round cycle

Use this table as a guide, not a promise, and read our month-by-month guide to booking the migration for more detail. Early or late rains can shift every date by weeks.

Months Where the herds are What you see
Dec to Mar Southern Serengeti and Lake Ndutu area Calving season, peaking in February, with predators close by
Apr to May Central and western Serengeti Long rains, rutting, columns moving north-west, fewer visitors
Jun to mid-Jul Western corridor, Grumeti River, central to northern Serengeti Grumeti crossings and long lines heading north
Mid-Jul to Oct Northern Serengeti and Masai Mara Mara River crossings, busiest from August to October
Nov Leaving the Mara, heading south Herds on the move, tall grass makes viewing harder

Most travelers fix on July to October because the river crossings fall there, and the high-season crowds follow. Calving season deserves more attention. Up to 8,000 calves can be born in a single day, and the short plains grass gives predators little cover to hide in, so the action is easy to see.

Serengeti or Masai Mara: where to go

The Serengeti is the better base for most of the year, because the herds spend far more months there than in Kenya. The Masai Mara is smaller, so it fills with vehicles when the herds arrive. For crossings, a trip that covers both the northern Serengeti and the Mara gives you the most options, because crossing points sit on both sides of the border.

A three-step process showing which Serengeti or Mara area to visit in each part of the year.

Here is how we match month to place:

  • December to April: stay in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu.
  • May to June: choose the central and western Serengeti.
  • July to October: combine the northern Serengeti with the Masai Mara.

What month is the migration in Kenya?

The herds reach Kenya from July, and the larger groups usually arrive in August. They stay until October, then head back south when the short rains begin in November. August and September are the safest months for Mara River crossings.

Nobody can predict a crossing. Some herds swim straight away, some graze at the bank for days, and some turn around. More days on safari is the only real way to improve your odds, which is why the shortest trip below comes with a caveat.

1. 8-day southern Serengeti migration safari

This is our calving-season migration safari, and it is the best of the five for newborn wildebeest and predator action. It runs eight days and visits Tarangire, the Serengeti and Lake Ndutu.

Newborn wildebeest calves stand beside their mothers on short grass, with a lioness resting far off across the plain.

Route and timing

Lake Ndutu is the main target from December to April, and February is the best month to witness the calving.

  • Length: 8 days
  • Parks: Tarangire, Serengeti, Lake Ndutu
  • Main target: Lake Ndutu, December to April
  • Peak month: February

Wildebeest cows give birth on the short, nutrient-rich plains grass of the south, where predators find it harder to hide. Births cluster into a few weeks, so you see hundreds of thousands of calves. Lions, hyenas and jackals follow the herds, so expect both new life and hunts.

If you want newborn calves and predators in the same frame, book Ndutu in February.

Who it suits and what to ask

This trip suits photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who care more about density and drama than river crossings. It also works well if you want a northern-winter escape, since the best window falls from December to April. There are no Mara River crossings on this route, so set that expectation from the start.

Before you book, ask where the herds were the previous week, because the herds move around the Ndutu area as the rains arrive. Ask too how close the camp sits to the plains. A well-placed camp saves hours of driving each day, and Tarangire at the start adds large elephant herds.

2. 8-day Kenya and Tanzania safari

This is the value pick for river-crossing season. It combines two countries in eight days at mid-range level, so you pay once for a cross-border trip.

Route and timing

The itinerary covers Nairobi, Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, a Mto Wa Mbu village visit and Tarangire National Park.

  • Length: 8 days
  • Countries: Kenya and Tanzania
  • Best months: July to October
  • Optional extra: balloon safari over Central Serengeti on day 5, $550 per person

In those months the herds sit in the Mara and the northern Serengeti, and this route reaches both. Outside that window, the Mara days are still good game viewing but the main herds will be elsewhere.

For crossing season, this route reaches both sides of the border.

Who it suits and what to ask

It suits first-time safari travelers who want the Serengeti great migration tours experience plus the Mara, without a long itinerary. The Ngorongoro Crater and the village visit add variety beyond the herds.

The balloon flight is the one add-on worth considering. It gives you a view of the plains from the air, and the price is fixed at $550 per person, paid before the trip. Ask how the nights split between the Mara and the Serengeti, and ask which camps sit nearest the river.

3. 10-day best of Kenya and Tanzania safari

This is the broadest of the five. It is a mid-range safari through Kenya and Tanzania that stretches the circuit to ten days, which gives the herds more time to show up.

Route and timing

The route covers Lake Nakuru National Park, Masai Mara National Reserve, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Amboseli.

  • Length: 10 days
  • Parks: Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Amboseli
  • Best months: July to October for crossings
  • Flights: you book your international flight to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi

Two extra days compared with the 8-day trip means more time at the river, and time is the one thing that improves your odds of a crossing. Amboseli adds elephants with Kilimanjaro behind them, and Lake Nakuru adds a lake and woodland setting.

Extra days are the cheapest way to improve your odds of seeing a crossing.

Who it suits and what to ask

This trip suits bucket-list travelers who want the migration as one highlight among several, and anyone who prefers a calmer pace. It also suits people who like variety, since you cover six parks instead of three.

We do not book international flights, so arrange your own arrival in Nairobi and confirm your dates with us first. Ask which days fall in the Mara and the Serengeti, since you want as many as possible at the river when the herds are there.

4. 6-day Kenya and Tanzania mid-range safari

This is the short Kenya and Tanzania mid-range safari for travelers who cannot spare more than a week. It runs six days through the Masai Mara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, starting and finishing in Arusha.

Route and timing

The trip is private, with a professional guide and flexible pacing. Lodges and camps are handpicked for location.

  • Length: 6 days
  • Parks: Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater
  • Start and finish: Arusha
  • Best months: July to October

Location matters more on a short trip, because every night near the herds counts. A camp close to the river saves hours of driving each day, and you want those hours at the water.

Who it suits and what to ask

It suits couples and small groups with a tight schedule who still want the classic parks. Be realistic about the limits. Six days across two countries leaves few nights per park, and a crossing may not happen while you are at the river.

If you choose this trip, travel in peak crossing season and ask for the most nights near the water. Check the current entry requirements for Kenya and Tanzania and carry your passport on the border-crossing days. If seeing a crossing is your main goal, the 8-day or 10-day trip is the safer choice.

A short trip can show you the migration, but only a longer one improves your chance of a crossing.

5. 6-day Tanzania wildlife and cultural safari

This is the Tanzania-only wildlife and cultural safari, with cultural stops added to the wildlife. It runs six days through Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, then finishes in Arusha.

An open-roof safari vehicle sits on a dusty track beside a clay-walled village house with a woven basket at its door.

Route and timing

The trip is private, with flexible pacing and handpicked lodges and camps.

  • Length: 6 days
  • Parks: Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater
  • Extras: cultural stops
  • Start and finish: Arusha

Because the route stays in Tanzania, you see the herds when they are in the Serengeti, which is most of the year. From December to June that means the south, center and west. From July the herds head north, so ask us which part of the Serengeti to base in for your dates.

Staying in Tanzania works best when you travel between December and June.

Who it suits and what to ask

This trip suits travelers who want wildlife and culture together without a border crossing. Our founder grew up in the Maasai Steppe in the Longido district.

It also suits travelers who would rather avoid the Mara crowds. Ask which camp areas we would use for your month and how many nights you get in the Serengeti. Because there are no Kenya days, you do not need to plan a second set of entry requirements.

What migration tours cost and how to choose

A migration tour's price depends on the season, the lodge level, the length and the group size, so a written quote for your dates is the only reliable figure. Use the factors below to compare quotes from any operator.

What drives the price

Six factors move the cost most:

  • Season: June to October is high season, and green-season rates in April and May can be much lower.
  • Accommodation: mid-range lodges, luxury lodges and mobile camps all price differently.
  • Length: each extra day adds lodging, park fees and guide time.
  • Location: camps near the Mara River or the Ndutu plains cost more than camps farther out.
  • Group size: a private vehicle is shared across the group, so more people lowers the cost per person.
  • Add-ons: a balloon flight adds $550 per person, so a couple adds $1,100 for two.

Compare quotes by season, accommodation level and days near the herds, not by headline price.

What is included and what is not

Our holiday packages include game drives, accommodation, park fees, professional safari guides and ground transportation in our own Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4 vehicles. Safaris and treks also include AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation. Check that any quote you compare lists the same items.

Your own costs sit outside the package. We do not book international flights. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for bookings with us. Optional extras such as the balloon safari are paid on top.

How to book

For July to October, book up to a year ahead, because small camps near the river fill first. Our terms are a 30% deposit within 14 days of invoice, with the balance due 42 days before arrival. Cancellation fees rise as the trip approaches, so read the terms before you pay.

Age rarely stops anyone. A traveler in their 70s in good general health can enjoy a safari for senior travelers, since you ride in a vehicle and the private guide sets the pace. Check with your doctor first, and tell us about any mobility needs so we can plan the accommodation.

Choosing your migration tour

Pick the month first, then the tour. December to April points to the 8-day southern Serengeti trip for calving. July to October points to the 8-day or 10-day Kenya and Tanzania trips for river crossings. The 6-day trips fit shorter schedules, with the Tanzania wildlife and cultural option for those who want to stay in one country. Whichever you choose, give the herds as many days as you can.

If you tell us your dates and group size, we will recommend the tour that puts you closest to the herds and send you a written quote. You can ask us to plan your wildebeest migration safari in Kenya and Tanzania and we will reply with a route for your month.
