Most Masai Mara safari packages cost about $430 to $3,900 per person for 3 to 4 days, depending on accommodation, transport and season. A shared-van budget trip sits at the bottom, and a luxury conservancy camp sits at the top. Choose a budget road trip if price comes first and a mid-range road trip for the best value. Take a fly-in if you only have two or three days, and a luxury camp if comfort and fewer vehicles matter. If you want the Mara and the Serengeti with one private guide, pick a Kenya and Tanzania combination.
The hard part is that operators price in different ways. Some quote per vehicle, some per person, and some leave park fees or flights out. This article sorts the market into six package types. Each one covers what is included, a realistic price per person, and who it suits. All prices are in US dollars, per person sharing, and exclude international flights.
We are Passionate Guides Tanzania, a founder-led operator in Arusha. Our founder has guided in Tanzania and Kenya since 2012, so the first item is our own. We point out where it differs from a Mara-only trip so you can compare fairly.
1. Kenya and Tanzania combination safaris
A combination safari joins the Masai Mara with Tanzania's Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on one private itinerary. Passionate Guides Tanzania runs three of them, at 6, 8 and 10 days, all mid-range with a private professional guide. We quote prices per itinerary and group size, so request a quote on our website rather than relying on a published figure.
What you get
Each itinerary uses our own Toyota Landcruiser 4x4s and a professional driver and guide for the whole trip. Park fees for non-residents, taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, accommodation and meals as listed in the day-by-day plan are included.
- 6 days: Masai Mara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, starting and finishing in Arusha.
- 8 days: Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Mto Wa Mbu village and Tarangire National Park, with an optional Serengeti balloon safari at $550 per person.
- 10 days: Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Amboseli, with guests booking their own international flights to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Who it suits and how booking works
Choose this if you have 8 to 10 days and want two countries without managing two operators. It is not the right pick for a quick Mara-only weekend, because the Mara is one stop on a longer route. Items 2 to 6 fit that need better.
Booking works on a 30% deposit within 14 days of the invoice, with the balance due 21 days before arrival. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Our packages include AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation on safaris.
If you have eight days or more, one private guide across the Mara and the Serengeti beats booking two separate trips.
2. Budget 3-day road safari in a shared van
A budget road package costs roughly $430 to $840 per person for 3 days and 2 nights, and it is the cheapest guided way into the Mara. You travel by road from Nairobi in a group, usually in a safari van with a pop-up roof.

What is included
Expect transport, two nights in a basic tented camp or simple hotel, meals, and game drives. Check that park entry fees are in the price, because the fee alone can be a large share of a low quote. The van seats up to 7 or 8 people, so a full vehicle is what keeps the price down.
- Drive of 5 to 6 hours each way from Nairobi
- Shared vehicle with other guests
- Basic camp with shared or simple facilities
Who it suits and the trade-offs
This package suits backpackers, solo travelers and anyone on a tight budget who accepts a shared schedule. A tent camping trip can drop to about $150 per person per day, but facilities are basic.
The trade-off is time. After two travel days on the road, you get roughly two days of game viewing. You also have little say over when the group leaves camp. If you can add a night, the experience improves a lot.
A budget Mara trip works if you accept a shared van and a fixed schedule, and it fails if you expect to choose your own pace.
3. Mid-range 3 to 4 day road safari
A mid-range road package costs about $540 to $1,290 per person for 3 days and $840 to $1,710 for 4 days. It is the best-value choice for most first-time visitors.
What is included
You sleep in a tented camp or lodge with private bathrooms and proper beds. Mid-range lodge rooms run roughly $150 per person per night in low season and $250 in peak season. Many mid-range packages use a 4x4 Landcruiser, which has a higher clearance than a van and handles rough tracks after rain.
- Private or small-group vehicle with an open or pop-up roof
- Full-board meals and game drives
- Park fees usually included, so confirm in writing
Who it suits
Couples, families and first-timers get the most from this tier. Four days with three nights is the sweet spot. It gives you enough drives to see lions, cheetahs and elephants at a relaxed pace without rushing to catch a road transfer.
The price spread is wide because of season. The top of each range reflects July to October, when the wildebeest migration pushes demand up. Travel in January to March or April to early June and you land near the bottom.
Four days at mid-range level is where a Masai Mara safari stops feeling like a transfer with game drives attached.
4. Luxury tented camp and conservancy safari
Luxury road packages run about $860 to $2,375 per person for 3 days and $1,845 to $3,855 for 4 days. They place you in a high-end tented camp, either inside the reserve or in a private conservancy next to it.

What is included
Luxury tented camps charge roughly $300 or more per person per night in low season and $600 or more in peak season. For that you get large tents with en suite bathrooms, guided drives in open-sided 4x4s, and a small guest count.
- Private conservancies such as Mara North, Naboisho, Olare Orok and Olderikesi
- Night drives and guided walks, which are only allowed outside the main reserve
- Conservancy fees that differ from standard reserve fees, which usually raise the price
Who it suits
Honeymooners, photographers and anyone who dislikes crowded sightings should pick this tier. Conservancies cap vehicle numbers, so a lion sighting is often yours alone. You can still drive into the main reserve to see a river crossing and return to quiet.
If the budget stretches only to mid-range, spend the difference on one extra night rather than a fancier tent. Time on the ground usually matters more than thread count.
Pay for a conservancy only if fewer vehicles matter to you, because the animals are the same on both sides of the boundary.
5. Fly-in safari from Nairobi, 2 to 4 days
A fly-in package costs about $850 to $1,050 per person for 2 days, $1,150 to $1,500 for 3 days and $1,260 to $1,785 for 4 days. It replaces the road transfer with a flight of about one hour from Wilson Airport.

What is included
Flights leave Wilson Airport twice daily and land at an airstrip in the Mara, where the camp's vehicle collects you in time for lunch. The package covers the return flight, accommodation, meals, and game drives in the camp's 4x4. Bought separately, a return flight costs about $300 to $450 per person, with one-way fares around $200 to $250.
- No 5 to 6 hour drive each way
- Game drives start the afternoon you arrive
- Luggage limits apply on small aircraft, so pack light
Who it suits
Fly-ins suit travelers with only two or three days, and anyone who dislikes long road days. They also help solo travelers, since a flight can cost less than a private vehicle for one person.
The gain is about 10 hours of travel time over a round trip by road. On a 3-day trip that is nearly a full extra day in the reserve, which makes the higher price easier to justify.
If you have only two or three days, flying in often gives you more safari for the money than driving.
6. Five to seven day Kenya circuit with the Mara
A multi-park Kenya circuit combines the Mara with Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha or Amboseli over 5 to 7 days. A 5-day shared budget version costs about $716 to $940, and a 5-day mid-range version costs about $955 to $1,815. A 5-day luxury version costs about $1,630 to $3,380.
What is included
Longer circuits add variety. Lake Nakuru brings rhino and birdlife, and Amboseli brings big elephant herds under Kilimanjaro. A 6-day circuit with Naivasha and Amboseli costs about $1,200 to $2,205, and a 7-day trip costs about $1,420 to $2,625.
- Road transport between parks, so expect long drives
- Mixed accommodation across several camps or lodges
- Fewer nights in the Mara itself
Who it suits and the trade-offs
This format suits first-timers who want several landscapes and a better chance at the Big Five in one trip. The cost per day falls as the trip gets longer, which makes it economical.
The downside is time in the vehicle. If the migration is your goal, protect at least three nights in the Mara and treat the other parks as bonuses.
A circuit gives you range and a lower daily rate, but it trades away hours in the Mara itself.
What shapes Masai Mara safari prices
Five factors set most of the gap between a $450 trip and a $3,500 trip: accommodation, season, transport, group size and extras. Understanding them lets you compare quotes that look different on the surface.
Price ranges side by side
| Package type | Days | Price per person | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget road | 3 | $430 to $840 | Shared van |
| Mid-range road | 3 / 4 | $540 to $1,290 / $840 to $1,710 | Van or 4x4 |
| Luxury road | 3 / 4 | $860 to $2,375 / $1,845 to $3,855 | 4x4 |
| Fly-in | 2 / 3 / 4 | $850 to $1,050 / $1,150 to $1,500 / $1,260 to $1,785 | Flight and camp 4x4 |
| Kenya circuit | 5 to 7 | $716 to $3,380 (5 days), $1,420 to $2,625 (7 days) | Road |
| Kenya and Tanzania | 6 / 8 / 10 | Quote on request | Private 4x4 |
What moves the price
Accommodation has the biggest effect, followed by season. Peak season runs from July to October, when the herds cross the Mara River, and the migration usually arrives in late July or August. Low season is April to early June, and January to March is a cheaper shoulder period.
Transport is priced per vehicle, so larger groups pay less each. Park fees for non-residents run about $100 to $200 per adult per day depending on season. Confirm the current rate and whether your package includes it. Extras such as a hot air balloon ride at about $415 to $500 per person, visas, tips and drinks usually cost more.
A worked example for a couple
Take a couple on a 3-day fly-in at $1,150 to $1,500 each. The package totals $2,300 to $3,000. Add a balloon ride at $415 to $500 each, which is $830 to $1,000, and the trip lands at $3,130 to $4,000 before international flights and tips. The same couple on a 3-day mid-range road trip at $540 to $1,290 each pays $1,080 to $2,580. When you compare operators, compare the total with fees, flights and extras included, not the headline rate.
Compare packages by the all-in total for your dates, because the headline price per person rarely tells the whole story.
Which package to book
Pick by days and by how much you value time on the ground. With 2 or 3 days, fly in. With 4 days and a mid-range budget, take the road. For quiet sightings, choose a conservancy, and for variety, choose a circuit. If you have 8 to 10 days, a Kenya and Tanzania combination gives you the Mara and the Serengeti with one guide.
Whatever you choose, ask for an itemized quote with park fees, transport and your travel dates. If you want a private route that includes the Mara, request a custom Kenya and Tanzania itinerary from Passionate Guides Tanzania.
