Uganda Safari Packages: 4 Trip Types by Cost and Length

The best Uganda safari packages do three things. They say whether the gorilla permit is included, they state how many hours you spend driving or flying, and they name the lodge tier. If gorillas are your only goal and you are short on time, pick a 3 to 5 day trek package. If you want comfort and less road time, pick a fly-in trip. If you also want chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions and Murchison Falls, choose a 7 to 10 day classic. If you want gorillas plus the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, a 14-day three-country route fits best.

The hard part is comparing them. Listings for similar-sounding trips run from under $2,000 to well over $10,000 per person, and few explain why. The gap usually comes from lodge quality, internal flights, group size and what the permit fee covers.

We are Passionate Guides Tanzania, a small Arusha-based operator that runs private guided trips across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Below you will find four package types compared by itinerary, length, price and who they suit. We then cover the best months, safety and age questions that decide which one to book.

1. 14-day Uganda gorillas, Kenya and Tanzania safari

Our 14-day East Africa's Uganda Gorillas, Kenya and Tanzania Safari suits travelers who want mountain gorillas and the Serengeti ecosystem in a single trip.

What the package covers

The route links three countries: gorilla trekking in Uganda, then the Maasai Mara in Kenya, then the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. One regional flight connects the countries. Our holiday packages include game drives, accommodation, park fees, a professional guide and ground transportation.

Uganda trekking is subject to permit availability and participation requirements. Gorilla permits sell out for peak months, so confirm dates before you buy flights.

Length and price

The trip runs 14 days. Payment is a 30% deposit within 14 days of invoice, with the balance due 21 days before arrival, in USD or EUR.

We do not book international flights, and comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory.

Who it suits

This fits first-time and bucket-list travelers with two weeks who would otherwise book two separate trips. It is a private tour, so the pace is yours. Families can join if everyone trekking is at least 15, the minimum age for gorilla permits.

If you want gorillas and the Serengeti, one operator and one regional flight beat two separate trips.

2. Short gorilla trekking package of 3 to 5 days

A short gorilla package is the cheapest way to see mountain gorillas, and it works if you accept a lot of time in a vehicle.

What the package covers

Expect a transfer from Entebbe (or sometimes Kigali) to Bwindi, a trek with a ranger-led group, and a transfer back. Many itineraries add golden monkeys or chimpanzees. The overland drive to Bwindi is long, often most of a day each way, so a 4-day package may include only one trekking day.

Trekking groups are small, with a limit of eight visitors per gorilla family, and you get one hour with the gorillas once you find them.

Length and price

Published examples include a 4-day gorilla, golden monkey and chimpanzee combo at about $1,986 per person and a 4-day gorilla trip at £2,779. The standard foreign non-resident permit is $800 per person, so check that a low price actually includes it.

A couple booking the $1,986 package pays $3,972 before international flights. If permits are included, $1,600 of that is the permits alone.

Who it suits

It suits travelers with a long weekend of vacation, a firm budget, and the stamina for rough roads and a muddy trek. It is a poor fit if you get carsick or want wildlife drives beyond primates.

A low gorilla package price is only a deal if the $800 permit and the lodging are both in it.

3. Classic Uganda wildlife and primate safari

The classic 7 to 10 day package is the one that shows Uganda as a country, not only as a gorilla destination.

What the package covers

Typical stops are Kibale Forest for chimpanzee trekking, Queen Elizabeth National Park for the Kazinga Channel boat cruise and the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, Murchison Falls for game drives and a Nile cruise, and Bwindi for gorillas. Chimp permits are a separate cost from gorilla permits, so confirm both are listed.

You will drive between parks, and some days involve four to six hours of road.

Length and price

Plan on 7 to 10 days, and more if you add Murchison. Published starting prices for multi-day Uganda trips run from about $4,900 per person to over $10,000 for 10 to 12 day small-group itineraries with high-end lodges. Ultra-luxury private journeys can exceed $35,000.

Price rises with lodge tier, private versus shared vehicle, and internal flights.

Who it suits

Pick this if you want variety: primates, big cats, hippos and the Nile. It rewards travelers who enjoy long scenic drives and several lodge changes. If you hate packing every second day, trim the itinerary to two or three parks.

A classic itinerary trades speed for variety, so count the driving hours before you count the parks.

4. Fly-in luxury gorilla safari

A fly-in gorilla safari swaps the long road transfer for a small-plane flight, and you pay for that time saved.

What the package covers

You fly from Entebbe to an airstrip near Bwindi, stay at an upscale lodge, trek, and fly back. Many fly-in packages run 4 to 5 days, and the lodge, private guide and meals are part of the price. The trek itself is the same as on a budget trip, with the same permit and the same ranger rules.

Length and price

Published examples include a 5-day luxury gorilla safari from about $4,760 per person and a 5-day fly-in gorilla trek from $5,650 to $7,380 per person. Another luxury safari listing starts at $6,733.

Because the permit is $800 of that, the difference you pay is mostly the flights and lodging, not the gorillas.

Who it suits

It fits older travelers, couples celebrating something, and anyone who has only a week away. It is also a practical choice if you worry about the physical toll of the road. It does not suit tight budgets.

The fly-in premium buys back roughly a day of driving at each end of the trip.

How to compare packages before you book

Compare packages on what the price includes, the days of driving, and the season you travel. This table puts the four types side by side.

Price and length side by side

Package type Typical length Price signal per person Best for
14-day Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania 14 days - Gorillas plus Serengeti
Short gorilla trek 3 to 5 days About $1,986 to £2,779 Budget and short on time
Classic wildlife and primates 7 to 10 days From about $4,900 to $10,300+ Variety of wildlife
Fly-in luxury gorilla 4 to 5 days $4,760 to $7,380 Comfort and saved time

Bar chart comparing starting prices of a short gorilla trek, a fly-in luxury trip and a classic safari.

The average cost of a Uganda safari therefore depends on type. A short trek costs the least, a classic costs several thousand more, and fly-in or small-group trips cost the most.

Best months to go

The dry seasons, December to February and June to September, are best for easier trails and clearer game viewing. Gorilla trekking runs year-round, but the rainy months, roughly March to May and October to November, make trails muddy. Rain also brings lower prices and easier permit availability.

Safety, age and fitness

Check the US State Department travel advisory at travel.state.gov before you book, carry comprehensive travel insurance, and bring your yellow fever certificate. Tour operators handle park logistics, which is one reason independent travelers choose a private guide.

Seventy is not too old for a safari if you are reasonably fit. Treks can last from about an hour to six or more hours on steep, slippery ground, and you can hire a porter to carry your pack and help you on steep sections. The minimum age to trek is 15.

Match the trip to your fitness and your calendar first, then compare prices.

Choosing your Uganda trip

Short gorilla treks save money, classics add variety, fly-ins save time, and the 14-day route combines gorillas with the Serengeti. Whatever you choose, confirm the permit, count the driving hours, and check the travel advisory.

Happy with our experience—loved having our own guide

“We had so much fun and saw wondrous numbers of lions, elephants, zebras wildebeest etc. The logistics were seamless and we loved staying in The Serengeti at Moyo Camp and Kontiki Ndutu camp. Visiting Tarangire is also highly recommended.”
