Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Honeymoon Packages: 4 Plans

The best Tanzania safari and Zanzibar honeymoon packages put the safari first and the beach last, run 10 to 14 days, and spend your budget on where you sleep rather than on extra parks. For a first safari, a seven-day northern circuit followed by four or five nights on Zanzibar is the safest pick. Couples who want seclusion suit the southern parks. Couples with short leave and a large budget suit a fly-in luxury plan. Anyone watching costs should look at a 12 to 14 day all-inclusive package. Advertised prices run from about $2,400 to well over $12,000 per person.

Searching for a safari and Zanzibar honeymoon turns up packages of very different lengths, prices that assume groups of six, and "luxury" labels that mean different things. It is hard to tell what you are actually paying for.

This article lays out four plans, each with its route, who it suits and what it costs. A short section then shows how to compare quotes. Passionate Guides Tanzania is a small operator based in Arusha, founded in 2020. Our founder has guided in Tanzania since 2012, and the first two plans are built on our own private safaris.

1. Classic northern safari plus Zanzibar, 11 to 12 days

Route and length

Our 7-day Tanzania Classic Safari is the base of this plan. It starts and ends in Arusha, covers four parks and runs with a private guide in a Toyota Land Cruiser 4x4. Add four or five nights on Zanzibar and the honeymoon lasts 11 to 12 days.

7-Day Tanzania Classic Safari

  • Tarangire for elephants and baobab country
  • Lake Manyara for a gentler, greener day
  • Serengeti for open plains and big cats
  • Ngorongoro Crater for dense wildlife in one day
  • Zanzibar for 4 to 5 nights, reached by a short domestic flight

Who it suits and what it costs

This plan suits first-time safari couples who want the famous highlights. You choose midrange lodges, luxury lodges or luxury tented camps, and the lodge tier sets the price. The safari includes park fees for non-residents, a professional driver and guide, roundtrip airport transfers, all taxes and VAT, and meals as specified in the itinerary. Zanzibar is not part of our listed itinerary, so ask how the beach leg is arranged. We do not book international flights.

When you pick the beach, choose by tide. Nungwi and Kendwa in the northwest allow swimming at any tide. The east coast around Paje and Matemwe is quieter, but the sea retreats far out at low tide.

The classic northern circuit plus a short beach stay is the lowest-risk honeymoon for a first safari.

2. Luxury southern safari plus Zanzibar, about 11 days

Route and length

Our 7 Days Tanzania Southern Circuit is a private luxury tented safari through Nyerere (Selous) and Ruaha National Parks. You spend three nights in each park, with fly-in transfers and a private guide. The Selous stay is at Selous Siwandu Camp.

7 Days Tanzania Southern Circuit

  • Selous: game drives, walking safaris and river safaris
  • Ruaha: wide, wild bush with few other vehicles
  • Transfers by air between the parks
  • Zanzibar for about 4 nights to reach roughly 11 days

Selous sits closer to the coast than the northern parks, so the move to the beach feels shorter.

Who it suits and what it costs

Choose this plan if you would rather have seclusion than the Serengeti name. You give up the Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro Crater, and you will not see the northern migration herds. In return you get walks, boat trips and quiet nights in a tented camp.

Fly-in luxury costs more than a road-based trip. Published safari lodging rates run from about $450 to $2,500 per person per night, so decide where you sit in that range before you ask for a quote. Park fees for non-residents are included, and so are alcoholic drinks, except premium spirits and vintage champagnes.

Pick the southern circuit when privacy matters more than famous names.

3. Fly-in luxury safari and Zanzibar villa, 10 days

Route and length

This plan is common among large luxury agencies. It splits ten days into roughly five or six safari nights in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro area, with light-aircraft hops between airstrips, and four or five nights in a boutique beach villa. One published 10-day package of this type lists $12,275 per person.

  • Safari: private guide, fly-in transfers and lodging
  • Beach: villa or boutique resort with most meals
  • Top-tier versions advertise roughly $12,000 to $18,000 per person

Who it suits and what it costs

It suits couples with only ten days of leave and a large budget. Flying between camps saves hours of road time, which is where this plan earns its price. Here is the arithmetic for two: $12,275 per person is $24,550 per couple, or about $1,200 per person per night, before international flights.

The weak point is the schedule. With several domestic flights packed into ten days, one delay eats your buffer. Add a spare night in Arusha or Zanzibar town before your flight home.

A ten-day luxury plan trades money for time, and it leaves no slack for delays.

4. All-inclusive safari and beach combo, 12 to 14 days

Route and length

Longer packages stretch the same elements over more nights. Typical routes cover Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, then a week or so on Zanzibar. Published examples show a 12-day private plan from about $2,395 per person and a 14-day all-inclusive at $5,670 per person.

  • Slower pace with fewer long driving days
  • Meals and park fees bundled into one price
  • Longer beach time to recover after the safari

Who it suits and what it costs

This plan suits couples who want a relaxed trip and clear all-in pricing. The lowest advertised prices often assume several travelers sharing a vehicle, and some say the price varies by group size. A couple should ask for the two-person rate. For example, $5,670 per person becomes $11,340 per couple for 14 days, before international flights.

Also ask which lodges the price includes. A low figure with a "luxury" label usually hides a modest lodge tier, so request the lodge names in writing.

The cheapest per-person figure is rarely the price a couple actually pays.

How to compare packages, prices and operators

Side-by-side comparison

Compare packages by total nights, safari nights and the lodge tier, not by the headline price. The table sets the four plans next to each other.

Plan Total length Safari part Advertised price per person Best for
1. Classic northern 11 to 12 days 7 days, 4 parks, by road Quote by lodge tier First-time safari couples
2. Luxury southern About 11 days 7 days, 2 parks, fly-in Quote, luxury tier Seclusion
3. Fly-in luxury 10 days 5 to 6 nights About $12,000 to $18,000 Short leave, big budget
4. All-inclusive 12 to 14 days Varies About $2,400 to $5,700 Relaxed pace

Group size, fly-in versus driving, season and lodge tier drive the differences. Ask for a written list of what is and is not included.

Timing, payment and cancellation terms

Wildlife viewing is strongest in the dry season, June to October. The calving season in the southern Serengeti peaks around February, and our 8 Days Southern Serengeti Migration Safari is built around it. March to May brings the long rains to both the parks and the coast, so expect some lodges to discount or close.

Honeymoon dates are fixed by a wedding, so read the cancellation terms first. With us, a 30% deposit is due within 14 days of invoice and the balance 21 days before arrival. Cancelling up to 60 days out costs 30%, 60 to 30 days costs 75%, and 30 days or less costs 100%. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. We take payment in USD or EUR.

Compare the cancellation terms in writing before you compare the nightly rates.

Choosing your honeymoon plan

Pick the plan that matches your leave, your budget and how much you want to see. A seven-day northern safari with four or five beach nights fits most first-timers. The southern circuit rewards couples who want privacy. A fly-in luxury plan buys time, and a 12 to 14 day all-inclusive buys space and clear pricing. Whatever you choose, check the lodge names, the group-size assumptions and the cancellation terms before you pay a deposit.

Happy with our experience—loved having our own guide

“We had so much fun and saw wondrous numbers of lions, elephants, zebras wildebeest etc. The logistics were seamless and we loved staying in The Serengeti at Moyo Camp and Kontiki Ndutu camp. Visiting Tarangire is also highly recommended.”
